  1. The photo of the Mansfield house in the back right and the now Root Avenue left-the corner where the gentleman and boy are standing is my grandmothers property where generations lived. Any information on Patrick and Mary McIntyre McLarney (great-great grandparents) or John J. McLarney and Ellen Coleman McLarney (great grandparents) both generations lived there. The now address of the property is 25-27 Jewett Street (on corner) and 23 Jewett Street (main house) closer to Central Street. This photo date back at least mid 1800′s. It’s quite possible the gentleman could be my great great grandfather. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

      Hello, Ellen.

Thanks very much for commenting, and adding yet a bit more information about this neighborhood and old Jewett Street and its families. I’ve often wondered about that interesting Victorian home and its history, as it’s adjacent to the Mansfield House, and I’ve walked past it a good many times.

But unfortunately, I know nothing about your McLarney family ancestors right off the top of my head. I’ll do an inquiry at the Derby Historical Society to see if they have anything on file. The Ansonia Public Library and their History Room might be another possible source of information. I’m planning a visit there shortly, and will add the McLarney family to my list of things to research.

Sorry that I have no other information to offer you right away, but you’ve helped me by providing a local history lead. Will let you know if I find anything.

For other interested readers, the photo Ellen refers to appears at the top of this article.
