Oronoque Saltbox Historic Home Survey
The term “porch” refers to the small hallway which, in early homes, connected the front entry, parlor, and hall. It was situated just in front of the chimney column, and usually included the front second floor stair as well.
These photos of the Oronoque saltbox’s porch reveal nothing overly remarkable. Of main interest is the stair itself, which featured two quarter-turn risers at each end. But unfortunately, little of any historic detailing remained (photo PR2). In particular, the hand rail and balusters above the string panel were gone, as well any railing that would’ve protected the second floor landing (PR5).
